High Frequency Therapy: A Supportive Tool for Skin Healing & Eczema Care

High Frequency Therapy: A Supportive Tool for Skin Healing & Eczema Care

Skin healing, especially when recovering from eczema, is never a straight line.

As the skin transitions from inflammation to rebuilding, it needs oxygen, nutrients, and gentle stimulation to restore itself. This is something I witnessed through my eczema journey while treating my legs. I've been digging and doing research about all the alternate modalities that are available to treat eczema, and one modality that has been increasing in popularity is CAP treatment. While looking through the case studies and patient reviews, I noticed that CAP treatment seems very similar to High Frequency, a modality that I'm very familiar with in my work as a Medical Aesthetician.

This blog post explores how HF and CAP therapy supports skin regeneration, particularly during the remodeling phase after an eczema flare up, and offers safe, effective ways to incorporate it into your healing ritual.

What Is High Frequency Therapy?

High Frequency (HF) therapy — a non-invasive treatment that can enhance circulation, deliver antibacterial ozone, and encourage collagen formation

High Frequency uses a low-current, high-frequency alternating electrical current delivered through a glass electrode. This electrode produces a gentle buzzing sensation and a violet or orange glow, depending on the type of gas inside (argon or neon). When applied to the skin, the current:

  • Increases local blood circulation

  • Produces ozone (O3), a form of oxygen with antibacterial and antifungal properties

  • Stimulates cell turnover, including collagen and elastin production

  • Gently warms the tissue, promoting lymphatic drainage and reducing inflammation

HF is often used in facials to treat acne, dull skin, and puffiness — but its benefits extend to those managing chronic skin concerns, including eczema.

The Role of Ozone in Healing

A standout feature of HF therapy is its ability to generate ozone. While ozone is often discussed in environmental contexts, topically applied ozone has profound skin benefits:

  • Oxygenates tissues: Damaged skin thrives with more oxygen, especially in the post-inflammatory and remodeling stages.

  • Antiseptic action: Ozone is a natural disinfectant that can help reduce lingering pathogens like Staphylococcus aureus, which often colonizes eczema-prone skin.

  • Cell metabolism boost: Ozone energizes cells, allowing them to perform essential functions such as protein synthesis and waste removal more efficiently.

The result is skin that feels fresher, less irritated, and more resilient over time.

Supporting the Remodeling Phase of Healing

Once active inflammation subsides, the skin enters the proliferation and remodeling stages:

Proliferation is when new skin cells (keratinocytes) migrate to the wound, fibroblasts create collagen, and blood vessels regrow.

Remodeling is the longer, more subtle phase — where new collagen and elastin fibers organize and strengthen the skin matrix.

HF therapy enhances both stages by:

  • Increasing fibroblast activity, which is essential for building strong connective tissue

  • Improving microcirculation, ensuring nutrients and oxygen reach the healing tissue

  • Calming residual inflammation, reducing itch, heat, and redness

When used consistently on areas of eczema that are not open or oozing, HF can help fade post-inflammatory discoloration, refine texture, and prevent new flare-ups by strengthening the skin barrier.

When & How to Use HF Therapy Safely

To make the most of this tool, follow these guidelines:

  • Best Timing: Use HF during the evening, after cleansing and before applying your body butters or oils (unless your device recommends no products during treatment).

  • Avoid Application Over:

    • Fresh wounds or open skin

    • Areas with thick ointments or oils already applied (as they can conduct too much current)

    • Active infections with pus or heavy discharge

  • Duration: 3–5 minutes per area is usually enough. Allow the skin to rest afterward and finish with your barrier-repairing body butter or oil.

High Frequency vs. CAP Treatment

CAP (Cold Atmospheric Plasma) is a more advanced medical-grade technology that, like HF, creates ionized gas to interact with the skin. However, CAP is:

  • More powerful and often used in clinical settings

  • Able to target specific pathogens and biofilms with greater precision

  • Shown in research to improve chronic wounds and eczema-related inflammation

While HF and CAP both utilize atmospheric gases to stimulate healing, HF is more accessible and gentle, making it ideal for at-home use during the recovery phase. CAP may be considered for more severe, treatment-resistant eczema under medical supervision.

A Healing Tool for Empowered Skin Care

High Frequency therapy is not a cure for eczema, but it can be a powerful ally in your skin’s healing journey. It bridges the gap between professional and personal care — empowering you to actively support regeneration, reduce heat and redness, and nurture skin resilience from within.

After using High Frequency for so long to treat my face whenever I had a pimple or inflammation, I didn't think to use it for my eczema. Once starting to use it, my skin transformed so quickly, I was over the moon in excitement and shock! Hence why I had to share this modality with you!

As always, observe how your skin responds. Healing is deeply individual, and tools like HF are most effective when paired with mindful rituals, nourishing foods, and a compassionate mindset.

Your skin is rebuilding every day — and with each gentle pulse, you're reminding it that safety, strength, and softness are possible.

As always,

Your beauty starts with self-care.
